Fic: Caroline and the Inquisitor

The story: on a Jazz Noir soundtrack

After the coven: Caroline followed the detective into custody. She joined him in his car. Handcuffed at the back.

“You know I could use magic to get safely out, right.” she said casually.

“That will only confirm your guilt.” Thursday said.

“Do you think I would still be here if I wasn't certain of my innocence? If it was so obvious that I was guilty, I would just run away never to be found again. I can assure you I can do that. I could pass you on the street and you would never be able to tell that it was me.” Caroline continued the conversation.

“You confessed to killing four people. You are guilty of that.”

“You know it was self-defense. I think you knew from the beginning that it was either me or… Billy that did it. You let me go, but certainly you must have had your doubts. I think that somewhere deep inside your mind you knew I was the one to kill those thugs.” she said calmly.

“Why kill them, you only needed to go away. I doubt they would have gone after you.”

“Heh, would you have been able to do that in my place?” Caroline uses blood magic evocation and alteration to get herself out of handcuffs. She puts her hands around Thursday's shoulders. “Wow! No need to get startled. I won't harm you.” she says quickly as Thursday gets startled. “I like you.” she said after a short dramatic pause. “Could you really have been able to let those thugs go? Imagine… It was your most beloved, and you were immobilized, made to watch as they killed the one you hold dear the most. It was true he attempted to protect me, but who wouldn't have. As it stood he might have thought they would have raped me or who knows… He acted as anyone would. In return, they stabbed in the stomach. Who knows what they would have gone on doing to me? I do not want to think, I do not want to imagine, and there is no point to. I saw the one I cared about most in the world be killed in front of me. Do you think I was acting rationally? I simply reacted. Magic was my only weapon. With my lack of combat skills even attempting to immobilize them would have probably caused their death. I just shot, in all directions. My last and only method of defense. Can you blame me for that?” she finished her story.

“Why not tell me that in the first time?” Thursday asked, tense, but aware that Caroline would not do anything to escape or harm him.

“Really? Would you have believed me? Say you had nothing to do with Hammer as you clearly are a Norm, that is a person without magical powers. You would have probably suggested I went to an insane asylum. How would that make it possible for me to continue Billy's dream? Take Lambda Pharmaceuticals further? It is our baby and the only 'living' thing I have left of him. It would have been ruined. Say you were Hammer at that point, which I know you were not as I had some friends look into you.” Thursday steals a quick glance at Caroline. “Oh, don't be surprised, you would have done the same… Anyway if you were, what would you have done if you knew I was a wytch? First I was in breach of the regulations of harming a Norm with magic, which does not have matter if you use it for self defense. Second, I as a blossoming CEO of what may become a grand company, would have had Hammer constantly looking over my shoulder, stopping me from achieving the greatness of the company Billy dreamed of. Remember the previous rule about wytches not being able to have large companies? Well, I had kept the fact about being a wytch under wraps for so long, I had to lie. Billy's dream was all that was left and I could not afford losing that. Outing myself as a wytch would have been terrible.” she explained.

The car reached a full stop as they reached the police station. Inspector Thursday took Caroline by the shoulders and directed her to a holding cell. She had to give up all her belongings to an officer. “You know this is pretty much irrelevant as I can create anything I may need with magic. I really doubt you had either time or the necessary resources to make all police stations zero-magic zones.” she said as she continued removing items.

“I will return to you later to interview you. Take her to cell W.2.” he said to her than to one of the officers.

“How sweet of you…” Caroline smiled.

[…a while later]

Detective Thursday goes to Caroline's holding cell to find her sitting on the ground, leaning against a wall, barefoot, and staring at the ceiling. Her hair is messy and unexplainably longer than when she entered the cell.

“Are you ready to confess?” Thursday asks.

“To what? Killing those thugs a year ago? That was self defense, I admit to that.” she said.

“To mass-murdering Hammer agents with your poison drugs.” he said, slightly annoyed.

“I have no knowledge of that.” Caroline said.

“I know you did it. And I am going to prove it.” Thursday said.

“How? There is no evidence… As I didn't do it.” Caroline said.

“You are eventually going to drown in your own lies and let the truth come out by saying something wrong.” Thursday said.

“Why do you keep assuming they are lies?” Caroline asked.

“Because I know you did it.” Thursday said.

“Interesting… Since I know I did not… I think we may have different sources…” Caroline said.

“I shall have you confess.” Thursday says in slight anger.

“Great! When do we start?” she said in a slightly playful and salacious voice.

Thursday puffs in anger and gets Caroline out of the cell, leading her to the interrogation room…
